Finding a doctor in Prague as a foreigner

It is easy to put off finding a doctor until you need one. Doing it early means you will know where to go when you feel unwell.

Register with a GP

In Czechia you usually register with a general practitioner (praktický lékař), who is your first point of contact and can refer you to specialists. Many practices in Prague have doctors who speak English. Call ahead to check whether they accept new patients and your insurance.

Specialists and mental health

For mental health support you can see a psychiatrist (who can diagnose and prescribe medication) or a psychologist, counsellor or psychotherapist (who offer talking therapy). Many people start with counselling and are referred to a psychiatrist only if needed.

Emergency numbers

  • 112 – general emergency number, with English-speaking operators
  • 155 – ambulance
  • 116 123 – Linka první psychické pomoci, free psychological first aid, 24/7

Save these numbers in your phone today, just in case.
