Finding a flat in Prague without getting scammed
Finding a home is one of the first big tasks in a new city, and in Prague the rental market can move fast. Unfortunately, it also attracts scams that target newcomers.
Red flags
- A price that seems far too good for the area.
- The “landlord” is abroad and can’t show you the flat.
- You are asked to pay a deposit before viewing or signing anything.
- Pressure to decide immediately, or payment only via money transfer services.
Good habits
- Always view the flat, in person or by live video call with someone you trust.
- Read the contract carefully, and ask for an English translation if you need one.
- Document the condition of the flat with photos when you move in.
- Clarify what is included in the rent: utilities, internet, building fees.
- Pay by bank transfer and keep records.
Housing stress is real
Searching for a home while settling into a new job and country can be exhausting. If the stress is affecting your sleep or mood, be gentle with yourself and ask for help, from friends, a relocation service, or a counsellor.
