Opening a Czech bank account: what to expect

Salary, rent, phone contracts and many everyday payments are much easier with a Czech bank account. Opening one is usually straightforward, but a little preparation saves time.

What you will usually need

  • A valid passport or EU ID card.
  • Often a second document or proof of address, and sometimes your residence permit.
  • A Czech phone number for online banking and payment confirmations.

Requirements differ between banks, so check the bank’s website or ask before you go.

Questions worth asking

  • Are there monthly fees, and how can you avoid them?
  • Is the mobile app available in English?
  • Are there fees for payments abroad or currency exchange?
  • Can you open the account online?

A small tip

Many expats find that choosing a bank with good English-language support makes the first months much less stressful. Once you have an account, setting up direct payments for rent and bills is one less thing to worry about.
